Thank You for Smoking in the Movies

There is a scene in my "Abyss" movie where Manny starts smoking a blunt while Eric has an unpleasant phone conversation with the bus company. So, the theme of this week’s Monday Movie Meme is inspired by one man’s pastime during a tense situation: Thank You for Smoking.

Share on your blog or in the comments section, movies featuring people who smoke. This includes cigarettes, cigars and weed. Remember to link back to this blog post and visit the blogs of other Monday Movie Meme participants. Here are my selections for this week’s Thank You for Smoking theme.

The Golden Child
There is a dragon lady in this movie who smokes cigarettes behind a screen while offering advice on how to find a kidnapped child in Tibet.

Set It Off
Three of the leading friends in this movie get high, smoking marijuana on a rooftop following their latest shift work as janitors. I’m saying three because the fourth friend named T.T.(played by Kimberly Elise) is a non-smoker who just chills with the group, imagining what the job market would be like if a nearby factory didn’t start laying off its workforce. This is the scene where Frankie’s (played by Vivica A. Fox) bank robbery suggestion gets serious.

Love Jones
One of the main characters, Darius, has such a heavy smoking habit that his married friend suggests that its the reason he couldn’t run fast enough through that train station. “Maybe if you weren’t sucking on those cancer sticks...you would’ve caught her!” is one of the lines that reference his smoking habit.

What movies have YOU watched that feature people with smoking habits?

Friday leaped to mind. Ice Cube's character gets high with his best friend, played by Chris Tucker, after getting laid off on his day off from work lol!!

Great list. One of the best ones is Alice in Wonderland's caterpillar. His smoke was magic!

Angela,

You are on a roll this week...Friday is a PERFECT choice for this week's meme! -- Reminds me of Smokey's enabling stance..."It's Friday...you ain't got no job, you ain't shhh to do" LOL

Maurice,

Thanks for participating this week. You know, I hadn't thought of Alice in Wonderland but that makes for a fitting selection for the smoke theme :) Almost makes me want to watch that movie....almost.

Robin,

That's great to know, I'll swing by and check you out this afternoon!

Any movie where Clint Eastwood played his "Man With No Name" character, with his omnipresent thin cigar. Oh, and the Hobbit smoking their pipe weed in LotR. Both movies would have suffered without a bit of cigar/pipe smoke on screen! :-)

It wasn't a movie that came to mind for me. It was the tv show The X-Files. There was a character called the SMOKING MAN. Mulder never got his name, but he was always smoking when they met up.

Visiting from A to Z Challenge. This is my first year.

Herman,

Funny how you mention cigars....although I'm more familiar with Clint Eastwood's cigarette smoking in Gran Torino and maybe Million Dollar Baby (I forgot if he smokes in this movie...haven't watched it in some time), I think that cigars can say a lot about a movie character and/or the plot or scene in which it's used. Or at least, that's the vibe I get when watching movies :)

Cigars give off a feel of either power, scandal or wisdom while cigarettes give off a vibe of stress, fear, mistrust, pre-sex flrtation or after-sex pondering, lol. I'm sure both items could be switched depending on the story.

Brett Minor,

OMG I sooo remember (I think...lol) that dude in the X-Files! My cousins used to watch that show all of the time and so, I became a fan of it as well. Thanks for participating.
