Monday Movie Meme – Let’s Dance!

After a few weeks off, the Monday Movie Meme returns with a theme inspired by the Sundance Selects documentary about famed ballerina Misty Copeland, screening at New York’s Urbanworld Film Festival Saturday, September 26 at 8:30pm: Let’s Dance!

Share on your blog or in the comments section, films with characters who strive for a top spot on the dance floor. Whether they are amateurs or trained performers, these girls and boys are serious about getting jiggy.

Here are my selections for this week’s Let’s Dance! theme.

Save the Last Dance

Upon relocating to Chicago, an aspiring ballet dancer learns new dance moves that help her gain the confidence to audition for Julliard in this romantic drama starring Julia Stiles, Kerry Washington and Sean Patrick Thomas.

Black Swan

A ballerina goes crazy when she starts getting in touch with her dark side to keep the lead role in an upcoming production of “Swan Lake,” in this thriller starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Winona Ryder.

You Got Served

Two best friends turn on each other at the expense of their entire team while trying to win money from street dancing competitions, in this musical drama starring Omarion, Marques Houston, Jennifer Freeman and Meagan Good.

Honey

When blackballed from the industry, a music video choreographer has to find alternative means to open her dance studio for teaching disadvantaged and at-risk youth, in this romantic drama starring Jessica Alba, Mekhi Phifer and Joy Bryant. Although we all know Honey – which I saw on television -- is not the best movie out there, it did well at the box-office, and so I know I’m not the only one who watched this movie.

What movies have YOU watched featuring characters that perform elaborate dance moves?

Monday Movie Meme: Dear Foodies, It’s Snack Week!

On Saturday June 13th, the movie-quoting crew at Foolish Waffles solidified themselves as the best of Philly’s food truck scene. In addition to winning the Vendy Awards’ (otherwise known as the street food Oscars) top prize, they were also voted as “People’s Choice” after nearly one thousand attendees sampled their pork belly Banh mi waffle and baby liege with strawberry rhubarb and mascarpone cream.

Did you know that moviegoers would unapologetically sneak menu items from Robin Admana and Flo Gardner’s waffle truck into a theater? Given the rubbery, microwaved soft pretzel bites I once grabbed at a theater’s concession stand, I understand Vendy attendees' preference for delicious (and fresh) food over pricey, processed junk being sold at cinemas. It’s also one of the topics being explored during SNACK WEEK, a series of posts I’m writing that delves into the various factors that affect what we eat when going to the multiplex.

Today kicks off this week's series with a Monday Movie Meme theme surrounding Foodies on the big screen. Share on your blog or in the comments section, movies featuring theater concessions. This includes people eating food while at the movies, working at the concession stand or carrying snacks while being seated in a movie theater. After thinking about this topic over the last few days, here are the only two flicks I have come up with so far.

Poetic Justice

A hairstylist sends her convict boyfriend to the concessions counter at a Drive-In movie theater, to buy popcorn, “and some jujubes and some Bonbons,” before a fight breaks out in the parking lot, in this romantic drama starring Janet Jackson, Tupac Shakur and Regina King.

Scream 2

A man pranks his girlfriend in the theater lobby after she buys a tub of medium popcorn without butter, and a small diet Pepsi from the concessions stand, in this mystery horror film starring Jada Pinkett, Omar Epps, Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Jamie Kennedy.

What movies have YOU seen featuring people eating, carrying or buying snacks at a theater?

What are YOUR favorite munchies at the concession stand?

Monday Movie Meme – Slippery When Wet

You know it’s too warm and humid when you’re breaking a sweat without performing any tasks whatsoever. That sums up the majority of the last few days, which brings us to the theme for this week’s Monday Movie Meme; influenced by the spring showers that have finally graced the northeast today – bringing with it some much needed relief: Slippery When Wet.

Share on your blog or in the comments section, movies featuring scenes that contain rainfall. It doesn’t have to necessarily be a torrential downpour but there should be enough precipitation to warrant the use of an umbrella. Here are my selections for this week’s Slippery When Wet theme.

Road to Perdition

The bloody climax of this movie is filled with enough raindrops to fill a swimming pool. That’s all I have to say right now about this crime thriller (starring Tom Hanks, Paul Newman and Daniel Craig) about a hitman who works for an Irish mobster. If you haven’t watched this film, I highly recommend it!

Twister

There is a rainy scene where two storm chasers are fighting in the middle of the road, which leads to a huge wakeup call for multiple parties involved, in this disaster flick (starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman) about scientists trying to invent an advanced weather alert system.

The Notebook

One of the most epic on-screen kisses just so happens to take place when it’s raining, in this romantic drama (starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, Gina Rowland and James Garner) about two lovebirds from different sides of the tracks.

No Good Deed

It’s raining when a former district attorney gets a life-changing visit, in this crime thriller (starring Taraji P. Henson and Idris Elba) about an escaped convict who wreaks havoc on a mother and her loved ones.

What movies come to mind when YOU think of rainy scenes?
