Successfully Cinematic and the Bigger Picture
At times, I have wished that success had a clear and concise definition that could be used as the ultimate guide on what goals to have or how to go about achieving them.
Still, I also often appreciate the fact that success is defined in different ways from person to person. To me, success means being able to make films and discuss them without needing to have day jobs, night jobs and side jobs to support my regular living expenses. This is especially important if at the end of the day, I realize that there is not much funds leftover to support any filmmaking efforts while paying bills and such at the same time.
Success would require me to be able to earn income through filmmaking or related activities so that I won't have to constantly be in a state of trying to make time for my own interests....I would be doing it!
These days, I try to keep the fact that life is short and nothing lasts forever in mind. Since I know that I'm going to die (eventually), I try to measure success by other important factors in life such as achieving a constant state of peace, being of some service to others even if it's only one person and trying to always do more good than harm.
I guess right now, success means being able to cover all of one's basic needs while having some room for additional tasks or activities that offer personal growth....whatever it is.....learning how to cook a steak properly, change a car tire, teaching someone else a new skill or solution to a problem or being more pleasant when interacting with other human beings.
There is a "Successful" song that pretty much sums up a lot about how some people who want to achieve success tend to feel a quite often:
"I want things to go my way,
but as of late, a lot of S--- has been going sideways" - Drake featuring Trey Songz
What does Success mean to YOU?

Success means never having to say you're sorry...or something like that.
For some, success means having something to contribute. Success means bettering yourself. Success means having something to show for your efforts. For some that might mean money, others works of art, and still others it could mean spiritual enlightenment or simply a clear conscience.
For me, success means a great marriage, a young son, and the ability to provide for their well being. Everything else is just gravy...
Herman,
You pretty much summed everything up very nicely :)
I like the part about "having something to show for your efforts" that you mentioned and have thought about this on several different occasions when trying to make decisions about whether to do something or not.
May you have all the gravy that you can handle in the world, and then some!
Thanks for your comment and for reading this post.
I want to see any movie you make. Good luck.

Never heard this song before;
"hopin' I never have to fit in..
So tryna keep up with my progress is like a dead end"
woah can i relate to this. It APPEARS like a dead end .. through the dessert.. don't give up, all the great ones "haveta fast through the desert" yet emerge transfigured. So ignore them bitches...hehe you know..the ones you have to interact with ; ) nice one
pbquig,
Thanks and it's good to know you'd watch my movies :)
Brenda,
I'm not surprised, many people likely never heard of this song before.....maybe because Drake is from Canada or something, I don't know, lol. The song title fit this week's prompt to a tee and some of what he says in the song describes how I feel sometimes with regards to being successful, pursuing success and obtaining success.
Thanks for visiting and adding to the discussion on this post!
You said: "I try to measure success by other important factors in life such as achieving a constant state of peace, being of some service to others even if it's only one person and trying to always do more good than harm."
That's pretty much perfect.
I think you summed up success perfectly. It is nice that success has the fuzzy edge to it that we can all adapt it to our own lives and realistically gage success. To find the precious balance and inner peace we all crave in itself is success. Great blog.

What a great post on Success. I think since success is personally defined we can accumulate small successes that add up to a big success and some aren't sure if they'll ever see success as they define it.
I think for me, there is a journey a process that leads us to success and I just try to enjoy that ride.

I'd stand in line to watch a movie of yours. Great post.
Word Nerd,
Thanks a lot :)
Kathy 29156,
I agree with you in that finding balance is key to achieving success. The ability for people to adapt the definition of success to their life is so great because it shows that it is in reach for those willing to pursue it, as it related to their own circumstances and perception of what it means for them.
Also, thanks...I'm glad to know you like my blog :)
Jenn,
Thanks so much and I like what you mentioned about accumulating small successes. That just may be the key to getting closer to the bigger picture because we all have to start somewhere and just like they say a penny saved is a penny earned.....all those baby steps made concerning success can turn into the foot size or mile size equivalents to that dollar that was built by saving all those pennies.
Reading your comment about enjoying the ride through the journey and process of success reminded me of that song called "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus. I know she's young and I know some people are not a fan of her but that is one of my favorite songs, lol. I like the message that is covered in the lyrics as she sings it.
Langley,
It's good to know that someone would come to watch one of my movies. I'll have to keep you in mind if I'm ever at a film festival or screening in your area, so I can let you know the time and place and encourage you to bring all of your friends!
Thanks for visiting, reading and commenting and I'm glad to know that you've enjoyed this post.
Perfect song to go with this post! I think most of us in the group have agreed that success is a variety of things and when you think about it, a good portion of that variety is innate and not something that we have to "go out and get", it's sitting inside of us waiting to be realized.
Great post and song!
To me success means having a clean shirt after going out to dinner. ;)

I think it's so important to keep learning, growing, and trying. I enjoyed reading you. :-)
Success for me means accomplishing my goals. I'm never quite there, but I'm always working toward that success.
Glad I happened upon you, by the way. I'm in the process of collaborating on a screenplay with another writer I met online. We've developed a great friendship through this screenplay and hope to one day see our film on the Big Screen!

Completely agree with Beth (Word Nerd)'s comment - especially serving even one person. And ... yes, yes, yes! Success will come to you in terms of earning your income through the craft you are passionate about!! Time, persistence and luck ... you'll get there!
Stay persistent and true to your passion! It's the journey and much luck to you to get the break that you deserve!
