Movies with HUGE twists, courtesy of Tina Downey

Join me in welcoming another guest topic for this week’s Monday Movie Meme, from Tina at Life is Good. The theme is: Movies with HUGE twists at the end.

Share on your blog, or in the comments section, movies that have major plot twists at the end. Remember to visit the blogs of fellow Monday Movie Meme participants. Also, if your response is written on your own blog, make sure to link back to this blog post. Here are my selections for this week’s Movies with HUGE twists at the end theme.

Mystic River

It’s sad when friendships get turned upside down over misunderstandings at a time when people in one small community no longer know who to trust -- or what to believe.

Night Catches Us

Loyalty has many meanings in this film about a former black panther who returns to his old neighborhood, only to learn that he is not welcome there. Murder, corruption, rumors, betrayal and forbidden love emerge during this dramatic tale of a struggle to separate fact from fiction while trying to protect the assumed innocence of one individual who could change it all.

The Family That Preys

Social status and money is the only thing that separates two families, tied together by love and business. As a wealthy construction company executive moves to take over his mother’s leading position at their firm, against her will, professional and personal relationships go up in flames -- right before the big surprise at a very heated board meeting that changes the course of the near future for several people.

As a result, the people in the ending scenes are in a very different position than where they started at the beginning of the movie (which opens with a wedding). Even the huge and deadly bombshell thrown in midway through the film doesn’t prepare you for the way the tides turn later.

Honorable Mention: I considered adding “Shutter Island” to this list but it didn’t make top billing for this week’s meme since the film is previously listed, during the week of Confusing Movie Plots, along with some other obvious choices.

What movies have YOU watched that feature HUGE plot twists at the end?

Nicole, probably the biggest one I can think of is Memento and The Prestige. You never watch the movie the same way again.

Oooh! Movies I haven't seen! Very excited to add them to my list, as well as the ones suggested by Maurice. Always looking for good movies, and it's oh so much better when I'm more familiar with the movie recommenders personality and style. For example, the two very sweet guys next to me in the airport bar here, if they recommended something, I'd consider it. Nicole - I'll watch anything you tell me, and I'm especially interested in your indie interests as I'm a huge fan of indies, but can't get The Engineer to take a chance on most of them. A recommendation from a "movie maker blogging buddy" just might sell it :-)
My choices are at my place.

I like Maurice's choices. I wish I could remember movies better because I know there are a ton of them I've seen with real twist endings. I guess one that comes to mind is The Usual Suspects. Another that I've mentioned previously is The Spanish Prisoner. The original Planet of the Apes is a good one. Also, Abre Los Ojos, the film that Vanilla Sky was based on and Los Cronocrimines or "Time Crimes", which is supposed to have an English remake soon that I hope they don't botch.

The movie Seven - totally didn't see that coming.
Fight Club is another good one.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS are usually considered the film with the biggest ending twist ever. It literally happens in the last scene ...

A unique set of titles that I really wasn't expecting given the theme. Nice!

I fully anticipated reading titles such as The Sixth Sense, The Village, The Others, Buried, Planet of the Apes, Fight Club, Saw, and The Empire Strikes Back!

I like the ones you posted about. Twist endings are always fun, as long as they aren't too predictable early on!

Fight Club
Vanilla Sky and
Seven are very good examples.
I also enjoyed the twisted ending of The Sixth Sense.

High-Five to Sydney for mentioning Fight Club!

Other movies that I think should be included are:

-Psycho: "Coming, mother..."
-Planet Of The Apes: It was Earth all along?!
-American Psycho: Whatdoyamean it was all in his head?!
-Memento: Will he never stop hunting the man? (and someone already beat me to this)
-The Others: They were...ghosts?!

This was an awesomely fun topic! Still smiling thinking about other movies that could just as easily been included on this list.
