Leaning on the Festival Circuit is a Lost Cause

Photo by Pavan TrikutamAs difficult as making movies can be, there’s nothing worse than going through the trials and relief of finishing one only to have it sit on the shelf collecting dust because no one is watching it. Even the probability of some viewers disliking it, for whatever reason, still trumps the death of a movie that goes unnoticed.

Last year, I mentioned wanting to ease up on playing the expensive and anxious waiting game that is the film festival submissions process. Between then and now I’ve had constant reminders of how important it is to have several ideas of how the life of a film can flourish – with or without being in a festival lineup.

Of the many things alternative events such as Couch Fest and Secret Cinema has taught me, one is that the industry standard way of showcasing indie films via festival screenings does not have to be the end-all and be-all for anyone’s work. So in the age of evolving technology and the flexible ways people consume their entertainment, I find it interesting how so many of us keep throwing our darts and funding at the same ol’ targets.

While the trajectory of films playing in theaters seem pretty clear – limited or wide release, VOD/Disc rentals (e.g. Netflix, iTunes, Redbox), home video sales, cable television, network television, etc. -- the same cannot be said for the thousands of independently produced shorts and features on the film festival circuit. That’s not even counting the tens of thousands (and counting) of films getting rejection letters from festivals.

L is for LeanLots of indie film producers view festivals as an end-game for our efforts because some of them provide career perks such as opportunities to secure the kind of distribution deals that make it possible for our work to be playing at a theater near you.

Other advantages that could come from getting into festivals include reviews in newspapers and related publicity, representation of some sort, and connections with investors who could fund future work.

Too often, however, this is just a dream since most films don’t play in festivals. Even for those that do, it seems like the life of the film ends there.

It’s bothersome how indie filmmakers often get caught up in the limbo of submitting to festivals, crossing our fingers and hoping for an acceptance letter. We tend to lean on these events too much with the expectation of them bringing us an audience and thus, validating our work. Depending on a third-party to do the work of getting movies seen is not a good idea because it can backfire when we don’t have any other cards in play.

How long do YOU tend to wait for something to pan out before moving onto another opportunity?

Do YOU like to exercise several different options when trying to reach an objective, or go with one that seems the most promising?

Monday Movie Meme – Wash, Rinse and Repeat

Enjoying massage chairs at The Laundry Cafe while passing out flyers to customers for the Couch Fest 2014 Film FestivalAs an official Ambassador of the Couch Fest Films 2014 Festival, I am pleased to announce that the theme for this week’s Monday Movie Meme is inspired by The Laundry Café at One & Olney Square Plaza, where over one dozen short movies from around the globe are showing in Philadelphia on Saturday, December 6th in the afternoon: Spin Cycles.

Share on your blog or in the comments section, movies featuring scenes where people are washing clothes. The characters or films you reference can be anywhere…in a Laundromat, at sea, in a laundry room, dormitory, etc. you get the picture. Only two movies that fit this bill come to mind for me, including “DIRTY LAUNDRY (AIR IT OUT),” a comedy about colorful characters who find themselves asking questions about life, morality and normality while washing clothes in an all-night Laundromat at 2:13am. They become clean of their life problems by nights end. Directed by Temple University graduate Shannon Newby, this movie was made in Philadelphia.

There is also a laundromat scene in "THE TOWN” where a guy gets chummy with the manager of a bank he just robbed, while she tries to wash a co-workers blood off her shirt in this heist movie directed by Ben Affleck.

What movies have YOU watched that feature scenes where people are washing clothes?

Join us on Saturday, December 6, for what MovieMaker Magazine calls one of the "top 5 coolest short film festival in the world."

Couch Fest is a cozy shorts film fest that brings world-class short movies out of the cinema and into non-traditional venues like living rooms, boats, community centers, and more. Meet your neighbors and see the best short films of the year.

Couch Fest Philadelphia is showing at The Laundry Café at One & Olney Plaza Shopping Center (Front and Olney sts).

6 Good Reasons to Join Troop 491 at the BronzeLens Film Festival in Atlanta

The Muddy Lions cast with director Praheme on the set of "Troop 491: Adventures of the Muddy Lions."It’s Official! "Troop 491: The Adventures of the Muddy Lions" directed by Patrick “Praheme” Ricks is screening in Atlanta, GA this month at the 5th Annual BronzeLens Film Festival.

For those who are unfamiliar with this movie, it is a family adventure about an artistic middle school student whose mother signs him up for the Boy Scouts, to keep him out of trouble. After witnessing a murder, he must decide whether to follow the “no snitching” code of the streets or the code of the scouts. He quickly learns that doing the right thing isn’t easy.

I’ve covered this film several times because not only do I like it (I’ve watched it a number of times, in various settings and enjoyed every single viewing), I also know for a fact that many parents and youth could benefit from watching this movie. Having been present during a post-screening Q&A session of this film where people from all walks of life thanked director Patrick “Praheme” Ricks for making this movie, there are many reasons you should watch it; more than I can name right now but let’s start with a few good ones (in no particular order).

  1. It has a gritty story that takes viewers through a myriad of emotions, inciting laughter, fear, disappointment, anger and joy before coming to a surprising conclusion.

  2. Troop 491 boasts a hip movie soundtrack that the whole family can enjoy.

  3. The movie provides an antidote to the stereotypical images of inner city youth – and their parents – that are often portrayed in more mainstream films.

  4. There are uplifting messages of people exercising strength, honesty and faith while facing adversity.

  5. It contains adult characters who take personal responsibility and interest in steering youth in a constructive direction.

  6. Troop 491 shows the harsh realities of how the witness intimidation that runs rampant throughout inner cities has neither an age requirement nor any boundaries.

If you or someone you know is in the Atlanta area, I encourage you to go check out this movie.

Troop 491: The Adventures of the Muddy Lions is playing Saturday, October 25th, 11:00am (EST) at the Georgia Pacific Auditorium in Atlanta, GA. This screening is hosted by the BronzeLens Film Festival.
