Confusing Movie Plots #movietheater #onmytv
Weâve all probably watched a few movies in our lifetime that had us scratching our heads in utter confusion as to what the storyline was all about. That is the central focus of the topic for this weekâs Monday Movie Meme, as Sandy at Youâve Gotta Read This has chosen themes for the entire month. Therefore, The Bumbles asks participants to share on their blog âmovies that make you go hmmmmmmm,â so here are my picks for movies that have confusing movie plots.
Shutter Island
If youâve seen this.....need I say any more? If you havenât watched this Leonardo DiCaprio (who is the current King Dong, by the way) headed movie, then let me be the first to tell you that this movie has the ability to drive audiences crazy.....forget the loonies in the hospital.
The plot of âShutter Islandâ seems so easy to follow and simple to understand since, based on the trailer and description, a U.S. Marshal (or is he?...yeah, thatâs what Iâm talking about) visits a hospital for the criminally insane to investigate the disappearance of a woman who allegedly murdered her kids. However, the plot of âShutter Islandâ gets very strange as this movie progresses but not in a productive way. The ending does not make any sense and had me questioning whether certain scenes really occurred or not. Damn you Teddy Daniels!
Some relatives and I went to a theater to check out this Bruce Willis flick that put M. Night Shyamalan on the map and gave officials in Philadelphia, PA a good marketing angle to try and attract visitors to the area. âThe Sixth Senseâ has confusing written all over it....so much so that my relatives got into an argument (or rather, very passionate disagreement) about the plot while we were all in the movie theater parking lot after this film ended.
They decided to agree to return to the theater the next day (or maybe a few days later, I donât remember those specifics, as I was a kid) and watch the movie again so they can get the answers to their questions and settle their disagreement about certain plot points in âThe Sixth Sense.â
These are movies that made me go âhmmmm...â and I plan to add one more in the next few days, so make sure you come back and read this post again later this week.
What movies made YOU go âhmmmmâ ?

Hmmmm? Just about anything by David Lynch. Especially Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, which are two of my favorite movies. I happen to like those movies that make me think.
How about John Sayles' Limbo? People were audibly angry in the theater at the end of the movie. I thought about it for a few days and then understood and thought, "what a brilliant ending! Now I get it!".
I love this topic.

I read Shutter Island first and then watched the movie. The book was more clear in my opinion and really helped make the movie shine - the ending of the movie was better than the book - changed ever so slightly but with what I felt was a clarifying impact - less ambiguous than the book. Andy did not read the book and absolutely hated the movie. He didn't get it, even after a second viewing.
I had to watch Shutter Island twice to fully appreciate it. It's actually quite the nice ride!
For a serious WTF movie my vote would have to go for Jeremy Irons in Dead Ringers. The bizarre subject matter, the strange relationship of twins, and the sudden ending made me stand up and shout, "Is that it?!".
Arlee,
Any movie that has people thinking about it or talking about it several days later is a keeper, so Limbo must be really good. I heard of "Mulholland Drive" but never watched it and the others..."Lost Highway" and "Limbo" are two that I haven't been familiar with. Movies with strange or confusing endings often tend to anger some and disappoint others. Although I didn't like the ending, I was satisfied that DiCaprio played well in yet, another fine role.....especially since it's like his latest flick working with Scorsese.
The Bumbles,
I didn't know that "Shutter Island" was a book but it doesn't surprise me that the book was better. I guess, a lot of movies never quite live up to the same quality or intrigue that the books do. Isn't it wonderful how much of an impact the written word can have versus moving images?!! :)
A few people that I know also hate "Shutter Island" and feel like they wasted their money on the theater ticket.
Herman,
I don't know if I could sit through another viewing of "Shutter Island" but definitely welcome your Cliffs Notes of the plot because I just don't get it. The movie was enjoyable to watch, up until the ending, where all of the suspense that I enjoyed lead up to an ending that left me with a bunch of questions.
There was one time after watching it in the theater that I thought I may have figured out what the plot was all about but then other parts of the movie didn't make sense or match up to that conclusion, so that put me back at square one with trying to "get" Shutter Island.
Still, the imagery and acting performances were on target so I would add it to my DVD collection, if for only to entertain guests to may be interested in watching it or to study the scenic elements such as lighting, action, pacing, scoring, etc.
What is "Dead Ringers" ? I'll make sure to look that up and read what it's about but movies that make you feel like questions were not answered can take the fun out of the movie going experience. It's like there is so much left to the story or areas of the plot that are incomplete, so I understand and agree that it is something that makes one get up and shout! :)
I read Shutter Island first and agree with Molly. The movie is defintitely less confusing if you already know the punch line.
I understood the twist ending to Shutter Island, but had to watch the movie a second time to fully appreciate it. There is quite a bit of buildup before the reveal, I'll give you that, but I think the end was a decent reward. I'm glad I didn't read the book prior to watching the film, but after reading your post and the comments I think I might just have to pick it up!
And as for Dead Ringers, word of warning: it's a bit bizarre and *very* Jeremy Irons-esque. You have been warned ;-)
I've seen Shutter Island but have not read the book. I think I will, to understand the whole thing better. Great post.
