Zombieland Sucks!

Today is not about a movie starring Woody Harrison
and that "Social Network" guy.
Photobucket
It's about me, sleep deprivation and Blogging from A to Z.
would require more effort than meets the eye.

I wrote all day and wrote all night for clients,
freelance writing assignments and my blog.
I began to feel like I was in a Zombie-like state of being
that almost made me as sick as a dog.

During April 2011, I read posts, made comments and enjoyed blogging from A to Z
But I started to loathe my freelance writing work because it felt like it was draining the life out of me.

Most of my energy was torn between something fulfilling and something else that pays the bills.
When I think about all the rewrite requests, long hours, not eating and still not working on my movie, it seems like I'm climbing up a steep and never-ending hill.

Feeling like a Zombie makes it tough to always keep moving forward on a quest to be all I can be.
But, one day during the challenge, I read what looked like a suicide note from {Mis}Adventures of an Army Wife that served as a reminder that there are others out in the world that may have it worse than me.

I'm disappointed that now there are spelling typos, grammar errors and other mistakes editors find in my work because I can't get any sleep.
My computer is slow and a mouse frightens me at night, yet, when the daytime comes, it doesn't make a peep.

I'm sure I'm not alone, as there are probably other bloggers and freelance writers who feel like Zombies walking around like a bunch of smokers zoned out on some herb without a clue of what to do.
So, to my fellow Zombie-like friends, Let me be the first to say that Zombieland sucks, but a longtime friend once told me "It could always suck more!" and so I invite you to join me in trying to view it as motivation and a lesson to reflect on blessings taken for granted.
.....Just a message from me to you!

Here's to all who blogged through to the end of this year's A to Z Challenge!

YouTube and a New Movie Rental Service in Play

A to Z Challenge
Would you rent movies on YouTube if it had a wider selection? This may be something worth considering if you are among the millions who visit this site daily because the available titles may soon expand to include major Hollywood hits, which is why it is my selection for the letter ‘Y’ in the A to Z Challenge. The popular online video website YouTube plans to enter deeper into the movie business with regards to distribution. It intends to offer an on-demand service for lots of mainstream movies that will allow users to pay for titles that they want to stream online.

An announcement about the launch of this service is expected to be made within the coming weeks, according to The Wrap while TechCrunch says that YouTube already has a video on-demand service called YouTube movies where users can rent titles for $2.99 each.

Major Hollywood studios including Sony Entertainment, Universal, Warner Bros. and independent studio Lionsgate have jumped on board for this new.....or maybe not new and just growing service. However, other studios such as Paramount, 20th Century Fox and Disney have refused to license their movies to YouTube at this time for the website’s new on-demand service due to piracy concerns; specifically, its support for pirate sites via advertising, SEO and other forms.

All of these major and independent Hollywood studios currently have video-on-demand deals with Apple’s iTunes movie rental store, so it is understandable if some of the companies want to remain with a current service that is popular, already has a customer base and is clearly anti-piracy.

The new, or expanding or whatever YouTube service reportedly puts the video site in competition with iTunes but this may be a hard sell because both services are viewed from different perspectives among audiences. Consumers who visit YouTube are accustomed to watching videos free of charge while these same consumers already expect to pay for services while browsing the iTunes movie rental store.

YouTube is confident that their service will generate significant revenue to justify having the feature available because it makes it convenient for their users to be able to watch a movie without leaving the website. There may be something worthwhile to this notion and it could work out well for all parties involved....YouTube, Hollywood Studios and Consumers.

Its success may depend on pricing and how large the movie selection is for users to choose from, which is a factor that caused Blockbuster’s Total Access service to experience some difficulties gaining customers when compared to its rival, Netflix. The competition could get interesting if YouTube keeps the $2.99 pricing that TechCrunch says it charges for movie rentals, when adds more mainstream movies from the studios that they reportedly have new deals with.

The current movie rental prices on iTunes varies for users depending on the film. "Inception" is $3.99 to rent, which gives YouTube a slight advantage if the online video site does expand it's movie offerings. However, "Fast & Furious" is currently $2.99 to rent on iTunes and it gets even better for movie fans....the iTunes rental price for "Transformers" is just 99 cents. I don’t think that YouTube can compete with iTunes on any other level, especially since the Apple company and Netflix seems to be dominating the online movie rental market.

Then again, this may be the first time in a long time that YouTube rolls out a direct way to generate revenue from its users. The website doesn’t have to try to gain customers because it already has them. So long as these movie rentals do not come with Pre-roll advertisements like many of the TV show content and music video content on YouTube, I think the on-demand movie rental service may be worth trying...if for nothing more than to experience a different option that may be better (or worse, but that is the point...to find out) than the movie rental services, if any, that you already use.

Maybe this is a new on-demand service that YouTube plans to offer or maybe the online video website is just giving its movie rental service a much needed makeover. Whatever happens, YouTube may continue to be the king of online video...but whether it will also be the king of online movie rentals remains to be seen.

What do YOU think about this new proposed, or expanded YouTube on-demand service?

Would YOU rent movies on YouTube?

Do YOU think a larger inventory of mainstream titles for the YouTube on-demand service will affect iTunes movie rental sales?

How much do YOU think YouTube should charge for mainstream on-demand movie rentals?

X-Rated Myths of the Cinematically Brainwashed

How much do you really know about X-Rated movies?
A to Z Challenge,Ratings,Helpful Reading and Research
Truth be told, it's easy to assume that X-Rated means something freaky....like Kim Kardashian's Sex Tape type of freaky or Jenna Jameson type of freaky because society has become so accustomed to labeling movies with this rating as such, but sexual behavior is NOT what X ratings are cracked up to be......at least, it's not ALL that these ratings are cracked up to be.

Here are some major X-Rated myths that I hope you take into consideration when reading DVD labels in the retail store or reading descriptions of movies that you rent or watch online (or on your mobile device or in your car or wherever you watch movies). You know how they say to not judge a book by it's cover? Well, this A to Z Challenge post will let you know why it's not always wise to judge a movie by it's rating.

Myth #1: X-Ratings are given to Adult films a.k.a. Porno movies that are more graphic or of a sexual nature than NC-17 movies.

Actually, the 'X' rating was part of a Motion Picture Production Code that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) used heavily between the 1930s and 1960s. The United States did not enforce an official rating for porn films nor was the X rating trademarked, so in 1990, the MPAA trademarked the NC-17 rating for films that feature explicit sex, violence or adult behavior that they are generally considered too "strong" to be viewed by children.

A to Z Challenge,Ratings
Up until this time, the MPAA classified non-pornographic films that feature extreme violence or explicit sex as X-Rated films that were not suitable for minors. Since the 'X' rating was pretty much fair game around that time, adult film producers used the rating to distinguish their movies from the mainstream titles that were geared for general audiences. After a while, adult film producers began to use multiple X letters as a way to depict how graphic or how hard core their film was. For example, X would be maybe soft-core adult while XXX would be your typical hardcore adult film. The 'X' rating only seems to be legally recognized as a specific classification of pornographic films in certain countries such as Australia and France.

Myth #2: Adult/Porn Films are the only movies that are X-Rated

No, no, no. That's not so! Some of the most critically acclaimed films in the history of cinema and beyond have been placed in the X-Rated category by the MPAA. This was during the days when there was no NC-17 rating and I bet some of you reading this may be surprised to find out that one of your favorite films might be among this list.

A to Z Challenge,Ratings
Among the mainstream Hollywood and independent films that were classified as X-Rated movies were some major Academy Award nominees and winners including "Midnight Cowboy" and Stanley Kubrick's famous flick, "A Clockwork Orange." Now, this was the original rating and "A Clockwork Orange" was later bumped up to Rated-R for it's DVD release. Other Hollywood films such as "Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III" also received an X rating for it's gory scenes.

A to Z Challenge,Ratings
The Melvin Van Peebles classic, "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" was among this X-Rated mainstream crew but was later given an R rating. Side note: Would you believe the director got gonorrhea while shooting one of the sex scenes in this movie?!!! However, the uncut version of this movie appears to be illegal for consumers to own in the United Kingdom.

A to Z Challenge,Ratings

All in all, the MPAA seems to have replaced their UNofficial X rating with an Official NC-17 rating for films that are beyond their Rated-R qualifications. Since the X rating has developed a sort of stigma or taboo that comes with it, films that receive an NC-17 rating are still perceived by many people in the same manner that porn films are perceived, which has a negative effect on the potential box office sales and critic reviews.

A to Z Challenge,Ratings,Helpful Reading and Research
Even today, less theaters are willing to screen a film with an NC-17 rating, which is the battle that "Blue Valentine" (starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams) had last year when it was slapped with this rating and fought to get upgraded to an R rating so it could be released in more theaters to boost it's chances of success during the film's opening weekend. With Michelle Williams nominated for Best Actress, a lackluster box office probably would not have been a good look for "Blue Valentine" and Company.

So, the next time you look at a movie or read about one or listen to a podcast or radio show discussing one and it is classified as an X-Rated film, make sure to do some extra homework before jumping to conclusions....for your own sake and for the sake of the producers because the film's rating may be totally unrelated to, and have a completely different meaning than this.....
A to Z Challenge,Ratings,Helpful Reading and Research
.....because at the end of the day, don't we just want to be able to watch a really good movie that entertains or enlightens us regardless of it's rating, after all?
